1t’s a symbol of hope.

For the 1 in 9 Canadian women who will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and the thousands of
courageous women who are living with the disease right now, the sight of a pink ribbon lets them know they
aren’t alone.

For that reason, I’m pleased to enclose a pink ribbon especially for you.

Please wear this symbol of hope throughout the months of September and October to show your
support for the fight against breast cancer. And, as you put on your ribbon, please also find it in your heart
to send a special gift to the Canadian Cancer Society today.

Your donation will bring us closer to the day when the women in our lives, our mothers, sisters, and
daughters, will no longer have to fear the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women in Canada, excluding
non-melanoma skin cancer.

Many women today will survive breast cancer, but the number of women touched by the disease is
still frightening. An estimated 23,200 Canadian women will learn they have breast cancer this year and
5,300 women will die from it. Tragically, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for
women in our country.

But the pink ribbon is all about hope and so is your generosity. Thanks to caring supporters like you,
women across our province can be optimistic about the future. Since the mid-1990s death rates for breast
cancer have been declining in every age group….

Research is the reason. The Canadian Cancer Sociery is the lar~est national charitable funder of
cancer research studies across the country and we are making a difference.

Even as 1 write, researchers are working to learn more about what causes breast cancer. They’re
searching for better screening methods, for more effective treatments with the fewest possible side effects,

As we near Rosh Hashana and the second anniversary of the Thornhill Torah
Education Centre’s founding, I want to take the opportunity to wish you a
year of health, happiness and bracha, and to thank you for being part of
TTEC’s great success, baruch Hashem, to date.

The program, you know well, began with five young men and, like all
hascholos, its start had ups and downs. Today, I am happy to say, we are
privileged to service 20 students – and the number continues to rise.

What is even more important, though, is that those who have partaken of
what TTEC has to offer have gained greatly. Not only did they take the
opportunity to study Torah and discuss issues and challenges facing them as
young Yidden on the college campus, but many have gone on beyond our
program to intensify their Torah study and growth, in both local venues and
respected yeshivas in Eretz Yisroel. For that wonderful result I am thankful to
HaKodosh Boruch Hu, and to you, for your important assistance in helping
TTEC.

I look forward with excitement to the coming year, especially with our
expanded effort that includes a morning shiur, a night program, and shiurim
on Gemara, Parsha, Halacha and Hashkafa.

But, as TTEC, with Hashem’s help, continues to grow and bear fruit, I will look
back too at those like you who helped make it all possible.

Chilton died of a heart attack age 59. We all know him as the voice behind The Box Tops, with hits like “Soul Deep” and “Cry Like a Baby.” But if you have ever seen “That 70s Show,” you’ve probably heard at least one of Chilton’s songs entitled “In the Street,” modified for the theme for the program. This song was on Big Star’s first album, which had a 1972 release.

Alex Chilton became legendary via Big Star.Three albums combining the influence of The Who, The Byrds and The Beatles. As William Ruhlmann writes “… in 1972 … nobody except Big Star (and maybe Badfinger and the Raspberries) wanted to sound like this.”

It was a format that Chilton followed for the rest of his life.

“In the Street” isn’t organized as the Cheap Trick cover that plays before episodes of “That 70s Show.” Big Star never had a hit single. Chilton’s solo work went deeper towards the chaotic, making it harder to attract newcomers.

It was both glory and chaos that made Chilton an artist of the highest caliber. Chilton could write a beautiful song, and he knew how to write things that would stick in your head, if you could handle listening.

Some of Chilton’s stuff is certainly difficult to listen to. But one can always appreciate that he marched to a different drummer. He created as he did because he had no choice. Whenever someone is in a predicament like that, you should check them out.

Too many options take us to a new bearded dragon

“We will re-launch our channel in the second quarter of next fiscal, after the summer break… The channel will sport a new name, logo and on-air look,” Jehangir Pocha, the co-promoter of the channel told PTI.

“This will give us good audience numbers… and we hope to double our revenues by the end of the next fiscal,” Mr. Pocha added. He, however, declined to share numbers and the details of the campaign.

NewsX was founded by former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea as part of INX Media that also included music and entertainment channels.

Last year, it was bought over by Nai Dunia owner Vinay Chhajlani and Jahangir Pocha within 12 months of its launch.

Mr. Pocha said the ‘new’ channel will have higher share of programming content, about 20 per cent, with focus on special shows for women.

The channel, which is struggling to make a mark in a highly competitive news media market has already hired some well-known names to beef up special shows in areas like foreign affairs and sports. They include Saeed Naqvi, Bishan Singh Bedi and Mohindar Amarnath.

On the overall outlook for the broadcasting industry, Mr. Pocha said there is rise in advertisements, which will improve revenues. He, however, did not rule out consolidation.

“Unlike Western markets, the Indian media industry is not saturated, but fragmented… going ahead, there would be consolidation and further growth,” he said.

Don’t hold your breath for too long, though – it may not happen at all. Some other sites claim Elan is actually the other name of Pixi (GSM version of Pixi, that is). On the other hand, the leaked document above goes in different direction – it has “Elan” and “Pixi (CDMA)”. It maybe just me, but I would expect to see something like “Pixi (GSM)” instead of Elan, if we’re talking about a GSM version of the device.

We know AT&T is eager to join the somewhat dying webOS party and the GSM-based Pre has cleared the FCC hurdle recently. Meaning, we could see the Pre on AT&T’s store-shelves within a month or so. My bet is they are waiting for the CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas to go all official with the announcement. Hopefully, we’ll have more information on Elan by then.

In the meantime all of us can hope the former is true – Elan is a new device and not a new name for the Pixi. Don’t get me wrong, Pixi is a cool little device, but these days if you’re not WVGA, you’re simply not that cool. Right?

But give James Weinstein, the agency’s new director, some credit. He has begun by cutting salaries of top executives, including his own. He’s also cutting 200 jobs and reducing retirement payments. And he’s set up a series of public hearings so that riders and employees can weigh in.

“We’re not playing games,” Weinstein said Friday. “This is going to be hard.”

NJ Transit is staring down a $300 million budget gap next year, and that assumes state aid is maintained at current levels.

How did we get into such a deep hole? The $150 million in federal stimulus money we received this fiscal year was used to stave off fare increases, and might not return. Ridership dropped by 4 percent, pinching revenues. And state aid shrank, even before Christie arrived.

That’s one lesson here: Shrinking state government is appealing in the abstract. But on the ground, not so much.

The state’s operating budget covers about 17 percent of NJ Transit’s budget, and the Transportation Trust Fund covers another 20 percent. So when Christie cuts operating aid, and refuses to increase the gas tax to shore up the TTF, bus and train fares are almost certain to go up.

The fight now is to contain that increase. NJ Transit has a reputation as a patronage mill, so looking to cut administrative staff is the place to start. Weinstein also might privatize parking operations and use surplus land to strike development deals. Salaries and benefits must be a target as well.

But that’s just a start. To scale back these fare hikes, NJ Transit needs to hear more ideas at its hearings later this month. Time for riders and employees to weigh in.

UN envoy to help with name dispute

A mediator from the United Nations is staying with Macedonia and neighboring Greece for talks on solving a name dispute that has entangled the two in their relations for almost 20 years.

Matthew Nimetz says both governments are “dealing seriously” with the problem the time has come for solutions.

Greece says its Macedonia’s use of the name “Macedonia” denotes territory claims on Greece’s own northern region which is also called Macedonia. Athens has previously blocked Macedonia’s NATO membership, citing the disputation, and is threatening to do likewise with Macedonia’s efforts to join the European Union.

Nimetz spoke after talks today with Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. He will visit with Greek representatives later this week.

The debate came into being after Macedonia peacefully separated from Yugoslavia in 1991.
