Why did they change the name of the street? Mellars Lane!

In a horrible twist of fate based on the whim of an otherwise nice lady, Newark residents both supported and opposed the changing of the name Sherwood Drive East to Mellars Lane.

The change was suggested by a resident to honor her father, who apparently worked to improve the neighborhood. It was the anniversary of his death. He had improved many things including: fencing, low lying tree limbs, unusual dirt on the ground, chickens where they were not supposed to be, and governance problems.

One neighbor said the change would help eliminate confusion with Sherwood Drive West or Sherwood Downs Road. (different agenda for another name)

Another resident of Sherwood Drive East, north of West Shields, was radically opposed to the change.

“I think it would destroy the integrity of the whole area,” said Helen Sage. “It seems something that should be a little more private.”

Sage said she feared it would set a precedent allowing people to change street names for frivolous reasons like name streets after your dog, cat or hamster. All yet another name.

Unique names not given become yet another user name

When we started the Sandy Hutchens Another Name blog we hoped that it would help to redefine the idea of “frozeness”. What do we mean by “frozeness”? It expresses itself in the following way: a person is suspect or questionable if they change their name. This is obviously a troubling view. There are a slew of reasons for a person to change their name. We need not go into that list at this time.

Name not given

When a child is born he or she receives a name. Usually this is from the parents. Sometimes it may be through an organization if the parents are not part of the picture. But I know someone who did not have a name for two weeks. Why? The parents could not agree on a name. The grandparents also had disagreements. Then came a certain moment and when the moment came, out popped the first and middle names.

There are other less fortunate people who are not given a name for years or decades. There are tales of individuals who did not receive a name even up to the moment of their demise. These are possibly urban legends but it is undeniably true that a substantial number of people were born without being given a name.

Twitter on Sandy Hutchens Another Name

When the name was adopted or “self given” it became possible to tweet on twitter. This was called a user name and it was accompanied by a password. The password was not given by the parents; it was chosen by the user. To be concise: the user is an entity, “user” is not a unique name, the user name is a unique name. It is possible to choose “username” as a user name but odds are that it has already been taken by another user.

It came to pass that a certain twitter account (with a user name I shan’t tell) gathered an enormous amount of followers. The followers were ready to link to anywhere the user wanted them to. All the followers read the missives of limited character length. And it happened that one day 70,000 people discarded their clothing in cities in the middle of February.

When did Sandy Hutchens become a name?

Before a child forms a discrete identity they begin to name the names of names. That isn’t so odd or complicated as it sounds. The name of a name of a name is, in reality, a pre-name. When did Sandy Hutchens become a name from the point of view of Sandy Hutchens? Before that point is the pre-name name. After that point it is simply a name. Regardless of the name ranking on the white pages, before anyone applied the name to any value or quality.

A name is a word but it is also different than a word.

NFL approves Mike Walker’s name change

Sandy Hutchens Another Name, August 25, 2009 – The NFL has approved Jaguars WR Mike Walker’s request to officially change his last name to Sims-Walker.

Sims-Walker is making the change as a tribute to his late father, who recently died of colon cancer. His jersey will reflect the change this year. Sims-Walker, battling an ankle injury, did some light running and caught passes yesterday.

The NFL approved a request by Jaguars receiver Mike Walker on Monday to officially change his last name to Sims-Walker, in honor of his late father.

Walker announced plans earlier this month to change the name on the back of his jersey to honor Michael Sims, who died at 51 last December from colon cancer. The name change on the jersey will take effect this season.

“That was a big loss,” Walker said of his father. “You’re thinking about the good times, the bad times.”

The death of Walker’s father occurred nine days after the fatal stabbing outside an Orlando nightclub of close friend Winfred Ezell. Before driving to Ezell’s funeral, Walker had Sims hospitalized, expecting physicians to give his father stronger pain medication.

After the funeral, Walker took a flight to Chicago to join his teammates, who would be playing the Bears the next day. Upon arrival, Walker received a message saying that Sims was on the verge of death. Walker’s father died a few hours later.

“It was hard because you’re in meetings, and you really don’t want to be there because you’ve got so much on your mind,” Sims-Walker said. “My dad was probably the biggest man, biggest person in my life impact-wise. I know my dad is looking down on me and just happy for me to be in this position.”

The Jaguars coaching staff hasn’t revealed much about the competition between Tra Thomas and Eugene Monroe for the starting job at left tackle. Both have shown flashes, but it appears Thomas knows that, at some point, the team will likely hand the job over to Monroe, given his draft position and the huge financial commitment the Jaguars made.

“The coaches will make the best decision, and we’ll take it from there,” Thomas said. “Whatever role they want me to be in, I will accept it. If I’m starting, I’ll just go out and play. If they need me to just be out there, helping out and backing him up, I have no problem with that.”

Thomas said he wouldn’t object to moving to right tackle if the Jaguars asked him.

“I could do it, if that’s what’s needed,” Thomas said. “It would take a little time to get my bearings right. I’ve been in a left-hand stance my whole career. It’s definitely something that could be done, but it would take a little while.”

Monroe seemed to play well in limited action during the first preseason game at Miami, but he gave up a sack Saturday night to Gaines Adams of Tampa Bay.
